WHICH BO STAFF IS RIGHT FOR ME?!
Hey, are you one of the thousands of people worldwide who train with the Rokushakubo or Bo Staff? It’s a popular weapon for karate practitioners, and for a good reason.
Training with a Bo Staff is a fantastic upper body conditioning exercise, with nearly endless Bo techniques and tricks that beginners and seasoned karate fighters can learn.
Or maybe you don’t train with a Bo Staff yet, but you're interested in learning it! Stop thinking about it and just do it!
There’s no better time to start learning a new martial art form than now. Here are some tips to help you begin your Bo Staff journey the right way:

Choosing a Bo Staff
There are four major factors you should consider when choosing. This might sound daunting, but as you’ll see, the four factors are closely related: length, weight/material, appearance, and intended use.

Length
As sport karate competitor and Team Paul Mitchell member, Jackson Rudolph, explains in this video, the right length for your Bo depends on your height. A general rule of thumb is that when you stand upright, your Bo should be about the same height as you. For creative competitions, you might want a slightly shorter one.

Weight/Material
Heavier Bo Staffs are great for traditional or strength training. They are typically made from hardwoods like oak and were originally designed for combat use. When training with these types of Bo Staffs, make sure you’re doing so under the supervision of your martial arts instructor.
There are also lighter Bo Staffs made from materials like lotus whitewood, bamboo, or even graphite.

Appearance
Most people who train with Bo Staffs use them in competitions. So in addition to length, you should consider the appearance of the Bo. Many competition Bo Staffs have eye-catching designs that add extra flair!

Intended Use
Your intended use is determined by a combination of the other factors. If you want a Bo for sport competition, you’ll need a lightweight, shorter Bo that’s easy to handle for tricks.
For traditional competition and training, a longer, heavier Bo made from strong material is recommended.

Sparring
Another use we haven't covered yet is live sparring.
If you want to use your Bo for partner training with fast movements and strikes, you should not use a wooden or graphite Bo. Instead, use a padded Bo like the ActionFlex or a foam Bo Staff.
