Choosing the Right Bo Staff

Are you one of the thousands of people around the world who train with a Rokushakubo or Bo Staff? It is a popular weapon for karate practitioners, and for good reason. Training with a Bo Staff is excellent for upper body conditioning. Students can learn virtually endless techniques and tricks. Maybe you don’t currently train with a Bo Staff but want to learn? Then stop thinking about it and start now! There’s no better time than now to begin learning a new martial art. Here are a few tips to help you get started on your Bo Staff journey.

Choosing a Bo Staff

There are four key factors to consider when choosing a Bo Staff. It sounds more complicated than it is—you’ll see, it’s all very closely related. The factors are: Length, Weight/Material, Appearance, and how you want to use the staff.

Length: Jackson Rudolph, Team Paul Mitchell member and Sport Karate competitor, explains in this video that the correct Bo Staff length depends on your height. As a general rule, when standing, your Bo should be about the same height as you. For creative competitions, you may want the Bo to be slightly shorter.

Weight/Material: Heavy Bo staffs are great for traditional or strength training. They are usually made of hardwood, like oak, and are designed for use in combat. Only use these staffs with the guidance of your martial arts instructor. Then there are lighter Bo’s, which are typically made from white lotus wood, bamboo, or even graphite.

Appearance: Many people who train with Bo staffs also use them in competitions. In addition to the length, you’ll want to consider the appearance of your Bo staff. Many competition Bo staffs have designs that catch the eye. The Jackson Rudolph Signature Bo Staff and Jackson Rudolph Professional Bo Staff are staffs that Rudolph uses in his competitions. And always use a Bo Staff bag to safely transport your Bo.

Usage: The usage is determined by a combination of other factors. If you want a Bo for sports competitions, you’ll want a lighter, shorter Bo that’s easy to handle. For traditional training and competitions, it is recommended to use a heavier and longer staff.

For Sparring: One very important point we haven’t discussed yet is live sparring. If you’re using your Bo for partner training with full movements and strikes, you should not use a wooden or graphite Bo. Instead, opt for a padded Bo like the ActionFlex or foam Bo.

As mentioned earlier, there’s no better time than now to get started! Now that you know which Bo is right for you, check out these tips and techniques to get you started.
