WHICH BO STAFF IS RIGHT FOR ME?!
Hey, are you one of the thousands of people around the world who train with the Rokushakubo or Bo Staff? It’s a popular weapon for karate practitioners and for good reason: Training with a bo staff is a great upper-body workout, with almost endless Bo techniques and tricks for beginners and seasoned karateka alike to learn. Or maybe you don’t train with a bo staff yet but are interested in learning! Stop thinking about it and just do it!
There’s no better time to start learning a new martial art form than now. Here are some tips to help you begin your bo staff journey the right way:
Choosing a Bo Staff: There are four major factors you should consider when choosing. It sounds more intimidating than it is – as you’ll see, the 4 factors are pretty closely linked. These include length, weight/material, appearance, and intended use.
Length: As sport karate competitor and Team Paul Mitchell member Jackson Rudolph explains in this video, the right bo length depends on your height. A general rule of thumb is that, when standing upright, your bo should be about as tall as you are. For creative competitions, you may want it slightly shorter.
Weight/Material:Heavy Bo staffs are excellent for traditional or strength training. They’re usually made of hardwoods like oak and were originally designed for combat. This type of bo should only be trained with under your martial arts instructor’s supervision.
There are also lightweight Bo staffs made from materials like white lotus wood, bamboo, or even graphite.
Appearance: Most people who train with Bo staffs use them in competitions, so in addition to length, you should also consider the bo’s appearance. Many competition Bo staffs feature eye-catching designs that help you stand out! The Jackson Rudolph Signature Bo Staff and the Jackson Rudolph Professional Bo Staff are the types of staffs Rudolph uses in competition.
Always use a bag or case to safely transport your Bo!
Intended Use: Usage is determined by a combination of the other factors. If you want a Bo for sport competitions, you’ll want a lightweight, shorter Bo that’s easy to handle for tricks. For traditional competition and training, a longer, heavier Bo is recommended.
Sparring: Another application is live sparring. If you’re going to use your bo for partner training with fast moves and strikes, you should not use a wooden or graphite bo. Instead, use a padded bo like the ActionFlex or a foam bo staff.
As mentioned earlier, there’s no better time than now to start learning! Now that you’ve found the right Bo for you, here are a few tips and techniques to work on.
