WHICH BO STAFF IS RIGHT FOR ME?!
Are you one of the thousands of people worldwide who trains with the Rokushakubo or Bo Staff? It’s a popular weapon for karate practitioners, and for good reason: Training with a bo staff is an excellent way to condition your upper body, with an almost endless number of bo techniques and tricks for beginners and experienced martial artists to learn. Or maybe you don’t train with a bo staff yet, but you’re thinking about starting! Stop thinking about it and just go for it!
There’s no better time to start learning a new martial art form than now. Here are some tips to help you begin your bo staff journey:
Choosing a Bo Staff: There are four major factors to consider when choosing. This might sound more intimidating than it is — as you can see, the 4 factors are all pretty closely related. These include the length, the weight/material, the appearance, and the purpose.
Length: As sport karate competitor and Team Paul Mitchell member Jackson Rudolph explains in this video, the correct bo length depends on your height. As a general rule of thumb, when you stand upright on the ground, your bo should be about the same height as you. For creative competitions, you might want it a little shorter.
Weight/Material: Heavier bo staffs are great for traditional or strength training. They are usually made from hardwoods like oak and were originally developed for combat use. You should only train with these types of bo under the supervision of your martial arts instructor.
There are also lighter bo staffs made from materials like lotuswood, bamboo, or even graphite.
Appearance: Most people who train with bo staffs use them for competitions. So, alongside length, you’ll want to consider the look of the bo as well. Many competition bo staffs feature eye-catching designs that add extra flair!
The Jackson Rudolph Signature Bo Staff and the Jackson Rudolph Professional Bo Staff are the kind of bo Rudolph uses in competition.
Always use a bag/case to safely transport your bo!
Purpose: The purpose is determined by a combination of the other factors. If you want a bo for sport competitions, you’ll need a lightweight, shorter bo that’s easy to handle for tricks. For traditional competition and training, a longer, heavier bo is recommended.
Sparring: Another use is live sparring. If you’re using your bo for partner training with fast movements and strikes, avoid using a wooden or graphite bo. Instead, use a padded bo like the ActionFlex or a foam bo staff.
As mentioned, there’s no better time than now to start learning! Now that you’ve found the right bo staff for you, here are some tips and techniques to work on:
