WHICH BO STAFF IS RIGHT FOR ME?!

Hey, are you one of the thousands of people around the world training with a Rokushakubo or Bo staff? It's a popular weapon for Karate practitioners, and for good reason: Training with a bo staff is a great upper body conditioning exercise, offering a nearly infinite number of bo techniques and tricks that both beginners and experienced Karatekas can learn. Or maybe you’re not training with a bo yet but are interested in starting! Stop thinking about it and just go for it!
There's no better time to start learning a new martial arts form than right now. Here are a few tips to get your bo staff journey off to the right start:

Choosing a Bo Staff: There are four key factors to consider when selecting a bo. It sounds more daunting than it really is – as you can see, the four factors are all pretty closely related. They include length, weight/material, appearance, and intended use.

Length: As sport karate competitor and Team Paul Mitchell member, Jackson Rudolph, explains in this video, the correct length for your bo depends on your height. The general rule of thumb is that when you stand upright on the floor, your bo should be about as tall as you are. For creative competitions, you may want it to be a bit shorter.

Weight / Material: Heavier bo staffs are great for traditional or strength training. They’re usually made from hardwoods like oak and were originally designed for use in combat. You should only train with this kind of bo under the supervision of your martial arts instructor.
There are also lighter bo staffs, made from materials like white lotus wood, bamboo, or even graphite.

Appearance: Most people who train with bo staffs use them in competitions. Therefore, aside from the length, you should also consider the appearance of the bo. Many competition bo staffs have an eye-catching design that adds extra flair!
The Jackson Rudolph Signature Bo and the Jackson Rudolph Professional Bo are the types of staff Rudolph uses in competition.

Always use a bag/case for your bo to keep it safe during transport!

Purpose: The purpose is determined by a combination of the other factors. If you want a bo for sport competitions, you’ll need a lighter, shorter bo that’s easy to handle for tricks. For traditional competition and training, a longer bo made from heavier material is recommended.

Sparring: Another use is live sparring. If you want to use your bo for partner training with fast movements and strikes, do not use a wooden or graphite bo. Instead, use a padded bo like the ActionFlex or a foam bo staff.

As mentioned earlier, there's no better time than now to start learning! Now that you've found the right bo staff for you, here are some tips and techniques you can work on:
Basic Striking for Beginners
Basic Bo Release for Intermediates
Palm Spin for Advanced Practitioners
