WKF Karate 1 Premier League Paris 2025 – Season Kickoff & Highlights
WKF Karate 1 Premier League Paris 2025: A Thrilling Start Full of Excitement and Emotions
Paris, the city of love – and for one weekend, also the city of karate! From January 24 to 26, 2025, Paris hosted the WKF Karate 1 Premier League, which not only marked the beginning of the new season but also kicked off the "Road to Cairo 2025." Despite the gray weather, the arena in Paris was filled with energy as the world's best karatekas competed for points in the qualification for the World Championships. With the new, stricter qualification system, every Premier League event counts, as the spots for the World Championships are limited: Only 32 athletes per category will ultimately have the chance to compete for the crown in Cairo.
Day 1: A World Champion Under Pressure
The opening day belonged to the lightweights, with the -60 kg category promising thrilling bouts. Among the contenders were Florian Haas (Germany), Michael Desoul (Belgium), Sami Tas (France), and reigning world champion Stefanos Xenos from Greece. Xenos once again showcased his class and advanced to the final. However, he was surprisingly defeated by a dominant Turkish fighter, who secured the gold medal. Xenos had to settle for silver – still an impressive start to the season.
In the -67 kg category, things didn’t go as planned for Grand Winner Said Oubaya (Morocco). Missing out on a group victory eliminated him early – an unexpected setback for the favorite.
Day 2: Egyptian Dominance
Saturday was all about the Egyptians: Abdalla Abdelaziz (-75 kg), Youssef Badawy (-84 kg), and Taha Mahmoud (+84 kg) demonstrated why they are among the best in the world. The three Grand Winners thrilled the audience with brilliant techniques and spectacular fights. Youssef Badawy, in particular, electrified the crowd – his final against Mohammad Aljafari from Jordan (currently world number one) was a highlight. With lightning-fast kicks and outstanding precision, Badawy secured a dominant 12:2 victory and claimed the gold medal.
For the PUNOK team, this match was a special moment, as Aljafari also represents the team and delivered an impressive performance despite his defeat.
Day 3: Debuts and Surprises
Sunday was all about new faces and emotional stories. French athlete Sydney Yvon made her Premier League debut in the -61 kg category and secured the bronze medal with a thrilling victory against her teammate. The arena erupted as Yvon stood on the podium with tears of joy.
Another debut came from Germany’s Johanna Kneer (+68 kg). She fought her way to the bronze medal match but fell short in the end. Nevertheless, Kneer impressed with three victories, securing her spot at the World Games in China.
In the Kata competition, American athlete Ariel Torres made waves. The former Olympic bronze medalist and new addition to the PUNOK team dazzled with precision and elegance, claiming bronze against a strong Japanese opponent. A notable detail: Torres proudly showcased the new PUNOK uniform, which, although unofficial, attracted plenty of attention.
A Successful Weekend for PUNOK
For the PUNOK team, the tournament was a complete success. With a total of three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, the team proved that they are among the top contenders this season. Alongside Youssef Badawy, Abdalla Abdelaziz and Taha Mahmoud also secured gold, while Stefanos Xenos and Mohammad Aljafari took silver.
The Road to Cairo Continues
The tournament in Paris was more than just a season opener – it was a preview of the drama that awaits us this year. Looking ahead to the next Premier League event in China this March, the stakes are high: it will be the last chance for athletes to qualify for the highly coveted spots at the World Games.
